Yoga and exercise training can help asthma symptoms: new study
For a long time, those with asthma were warned to avoid exercise as it could trigger an asthma attack or make it worse.
A new study released in Annals of Medicine, is turning that age-old wisdom around.
Researchers performed a meta-analysis of the effects different kinds of exercise exerted on lung function in more than 2100 asthma patients.
Some studies have revealed that -- contrary to what is commonly believedcertain kinds of exercise actually boost the function of the lungs in people with asthma.
The study examined five types of exercises that included breathing exercises cardiovascular training, relaxing and breathing training, and yoga and aerobic exercise.
Every type of exercise was evaluated based on the impact it had on asthma-related parameters, including FEV1 - forced expiratory volume. This is the quantity of air a person can forcefully exhale within a second.
The five different types of exercise are efficient in improving lung function, however two kinds were the most effective.
"Breathing training combined with aerobic training and yoga training appear to be particularly advantageous, offering potential avenues for effective treatment approaches," the lead author Shuangtao Xing, an Associate Professor at Henan Normal University in Henan, China, said in a press release.
Training in breathing can include a variety of methods. One technique, referred to as diaphragmatic breathing belly breathing, also known as belly breathing is an method that concentrates on the diaphragm abdominal muscle which regulates your breathing.
Other breathing techniques that are popular to treat asthma sufferers include nasal breathing and exhaling with lips that are pursed, according to Healthline.
