Does Mct Oil Have Any Health Benefits That Can Be Attributed To It?

In an age where nutritional supplements are claimed to assist in everything from better sleep to better vision MCT oil is commonly marketed as offering a variety of most sought-after health benefits.

At first, it was a popular choice for fitness gurus and bodybuilders but the supplement has since gained popularity, even impressing celebrities such as Kourtney Kardashian, Alicia Vikander and Emma Stone.

Despite its increased popularity, not all of the MCT oil's claimed health benefits are grounded in scientific research and some aren't even. Experts also explain why MCT oil isn't suitable for anyone.

How do I know MCT oil?

MCT is a short form for medium-chain triglycerides, the dietary fats that are found naturally in various food items such as coconut oil and palm oil and a few dairy products, like cheese, butter yogurt, goat's and cow's milk. For MCT oil, these fats are derived out of "coconut and palm kernel sources" and transformed into clear liquids, says Caroline Susie, RD, a registered dietician who is also the National spokesperson of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

One of the aspects that is what makes MCT oil different is the fact that its molecules are smaller than the majority of other fats, which makes it easy to digest. "Most fats have a more complicated trek through the body," explain Jill Weisenberger, MS, RDN, a registered dietician who is the author of " Prediabetes: A Complete Guide." Contrary to long-chain fatty acids smaller ones can be transported direct to the liver to process. Due to this "MCT oil can be used medically because the fats are small enough to be absorbed into the body," she says.

Medium-chain triglycerides can be obtained from the mentioned sources of food, however MCT oil is typically consumed as supplementation in powder or liquid form. It is frequently mixed into coffee smoothies, smoothies, or sometimes salad dressings.

What is MCT oil good for? on behalf of an individual?

The claimed health benefits of MCT oil are improved cholesterol levels, decreased inflammation as well as improved physical performance, improved mental health, and a lower risk of developing diabetes although research to support on these claims isn't available.

MCT oil is likely to be the most well-known as an weight loss method because the oil has been linked with feelings of being fuller and tend to eat less when they're not hungry, however the research isn't a good one on this point as well. "Only small studies have shown very small benefits for weight management," says Weisenberger.

A different one of MCT oil's well-studied benefits is that it can boost your energy, Susie explains. "And some research suggests MCT oil can also increase physical strength," Susie adds, "but again, more research is needed."

In short, experts claim that there are only a few claims of health benefits linked to MCT oil, but they are supported by research findings.

Who shouldn't use MCT oil?

However, incorporating MCT oil in a diet in small amounts is considered safe, according to the Cleveland Clinic, however, only for healthy people. "MCT oils are not for everyone," says Weisenberger.

She suggests that you stay clear of MCT oil supplements for those suffering from an heart problem or suffers from the fatty liver disease since medium-chain triglycerides still fats, and MCT oil is extremely high in calories, with around 120 calories per tablespoon. It is also recommended that healthy individuals who are considering using MCT oil "it's always a good idea talk to your doctor before starting any supplements."
